About the Painting

This painting marks the 12th and final painting in my swallowtail series which took just over two years to complete. To celebrate the slow, delicious process, I’ve included a few slow foods in this month’s painting. Yes, you can buy pomegranate seeds plucked and encased in plastic. And you can buy a bag of shelled walnuts. But when you take the time to handle and prepare the foods yourself, when you work for it, the food just tastes better. I feel like so much of my time is spent racing around, but it’s these quiet moments with slow tasks that brings us pleasure and meaning in our lives.

The featured butterfly is a male Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing. “Swallowtail” and “birdwing” both describe butterflies within the Papilionidae family, but the term “Swallowtail” generally refers to the whole family. These butterflies are a protected species found in the rainforests of the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Natuna, Sumatra, and various small islands west of Sumatra. They have an impressive wingspan, up to about 6 1/2” and are sometimes mistaken for birds (hence “birdwing”).
